Eric Boyd, former Microsoft executive, has joined American artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic as the head of infrastructure. Boyd had recently announced his decision to exit Microsoft after having spent over 17 years with the tech giant. “Today is my last day at Microsoft after nearly 17 years, and I’ve been trying to figure out how to sum up a journey that still feels hard to believe. Microsoft is the only company my kids have ever known me to work for. It’s so ingrained in them that when one was asked as a 6-year old to name the three branches of government, he confidently put Microsoft first. But it wasn’t obvious at the start that I would be here this long,” he had said.
Boyd, who most recently served as President of Microsoft’s AI Platform, played a key role in building and scaling the company’s AI ecosystem. His work included leading initiatives such as the Azure OpenAI Service and Microsoft Foundry, which enable developers to build AI-powered applications using advanced models from multiple providers. He was also closely associated with powering Microsoft’s Copilot offerings and broader machine learning capabilities on Azure.
Boyd joined Microsoft in 2009, at a time when the company was still largely known for its traditional software business. Over the years, he contributed to its transition into a cloud and AI-driven organisation. He initially led the Bing Ads development team, where he worked on large-scale ad serving systems and data analytics platforms.
His move to Seattle in 2011 marked a turning point, both personally and professionally, as he witnessed the growth of Bing into a competitive and profitable business. Later, in 2018, he was chosen to lead the Azure AI team, a role that placed him at the centre of Microsoft’s push into large language models and generative AI technologies.
During this phase, Boyd worked closely with senior leadership, including CEO Satya Nadella, and was part of the company’s broader transformation into a cloud-first, AI-led enterprise. Reflecting on this journey, he credited the organisation’s culture, leadership, and people for shaping his approach to building products and teams.
His move to Anthropic comes at a time when competition in the AI infrastructure and foundation models space is intensifying globally. With his deep experience in scaling AI platforms and enterprise-grade infrastructure, Boyd is expected to play a key role in strengthening Anthropic’s capabilities as it continues to expand its presence in the rapidly evolving AI ecosystem.
“I’m excited to join the amazing team at Anthropic today where I’ll be leading the Infrastructure team! I’ve been privileged to have a front row seat to the explosion of LLMs, and the team at Anthropic is truly special. The combination of the absolute leading models with a culture that is committed to their mission is inspiring and I can’t wait to lean in to help. AI is accelerating at an incredible pace, and the impact of Claude Code in the last 6 months, and particularly the last two months, just shows the power of what is possible. Bringing Powerful AI to the world in a way that brings the benefits to everyone will be so important, and I can’t think of a better place to make this happen,” he said announcing his appointment.
