OpenAI has released the new and upgraded version of GPT‑5, which is ChatGPT 5.1. The company says that this version is its most-used model and it will be easier to understand as well as faster on simple tasks, more persistent on complex ones. Users will now also be able to shape the chatbot’s tone, adds OpenAI: “We’re introducing more intuitive and effective controls so ChatGPT can better match the tone you want in responses.” The upgraded model will begin to roll out initially for paid users, and then to everyone.

Top New Features of ChatGPT 5.1
Initially avaible to Pro, Plus, Go, and Business users, the upgraded model will be made available to free and logged-out users in the coming weeks. Enterprise and Edu plans get a seven-day early-access toggle. After that window, GPT‑5.1 will become the sole default model, adds the company. Some of the new features are as follows:
- GPT‑5.1 Instant is warmer and more conversational, often surprising users with playful yet useful responses.
- Instruction following has improved, so it answers questions more reliably.
- Adaptive reasoning allows it to think before responding to tough questions, giving more accurate and complete answers, especially in math and coding.
- GPT‑5 Thinking adapts its time based on complexity, providing thorough answers faster for simple questions and more detailed ones for complex problems.
- Responses are clearer and easier to understand, with less jargon, making technical concepts more approachable.

“If you check ChatGPT today, you may not see GPT‑5.1 available immediately. We plan to roll it out gradually over the next few days to help keep performance stable for everyone. We will also update GPT‑5 Pro to GPT‑5.1 Pro soon. We’re bringing both GPT‑5.1 Instant and GPT‑5.1 Thinking to the API later this week. GPT‑5.1 Instant will be added as gpt-5.1-chat-latest, and GPT‑5.1 Thinking will be released as GPT‑5.1 in the API, both with adaptive reasoning,” adds the company.
