After Backlash from Parents, Roblox Shares Early Results of Mandatory Age Checks

One month after introducing mandatory age checks for chat access, Roblox has released early data pointing to strong user adoption, improved age verification, and enhancements aimed at increasing accuracy and parental oversight. The gaming platform, which has often faced scrutiny over the effectiveness of its age verification measures, said that more than 45% of its 144 million global daily active users have already completed an age check since the rollout. The company noted that the early uptake has significantly reduced its dependence on self-declared age data, helping improve the reliability of age-based experiences and safety features.

According to Roblox, the increased participation has led to greater age certainty, enabling the platform to better tailor functionality, content, and communication tools to different user groups. The updated demographic breakdown now indicates that 35% of users are under the age of 13, 38% fall within the 13–17 age group, and 27% are aged 18 and above. In response to early feedback, Roblox has also introduced new accuracy measures, including a one-time reset option for users who may have completed the age-check process incorrectly. This includes cases where a parent may have inadvertently verified their own age instead of their child’s. Parents can also make a one-time correction to their child’s age through Parental Controls, the company said.

Beyond manual corrections, Roblox stated that it is continuously evaluating user behaviour through multiple signals to detect potential mismatches between a user’s profile age and their actual usage patterns. This ongoing assessment is intended to identify accounts that may be significantly older or younger than stated, adding an additional layer of verification. The platform also highlighted updates to its Trusted Connections feature. While users aged 13 and above can already add family and friends across age groups for chat, Roblox said that trusted connections for users under 13, supported by parental oversight, will be introduced soon.

The latest updates come as Roblox continues to face pressure from parents, regulators, and safety advocates to strengthen protections for younger users. The company said it will continue refining its systems to enhance safety, accuracy, and age-appropriate engagement across its platforms.
