The department issue a notice regarding the extension, and stated that users would be allowed to file their income tax returns on the 16th.

“The due date for filing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2025-26, originally due on 31st July 2025, was extended to 15th September 2025. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to further extend the due date for filing these ITRs for AY 2025-26 from 15th September, 2025 to 16th September, 2025. To enable changes in the utilities, the e-filing portal will remain in maintenance mode from 12:00 AM to 02:30AM on 16th September 2025,” said a statement from the Income tax department.
However, even though the income tax ITR filing due date was extended, users have been stating that they were facing trouble logging into the income tax portal. “I have been unable to log in to the portal since this morning. An extension of the deadline will not help if this issue continues. I request the team to kindly look into it at the earliest. I have already tried clearing the cache and checking on different browsers and systems, but the issue still persists,” said a user called Raj.

Similarly, “There is no use in extending the ITR filing date if the portal is not functioning properly. I have been trying to complete my ITR for the past few days and have tried every possible way, but due to glitches on almost every page, it is not happening. Please take urgent steps to restore the portal’s functionality,” said another user.
While some users have been able to make their ITR payments, they claim that the challan for the same was not getting generated by the Income tax portal. “paid the tax yesterday via Internet banking, but no challan was generated. The portal still shows the status as ‘Payment initiated,’ and I am unable to proceed with filing my tax return. I had raised a grievance and also emailed regarding this issue, but no resolution has been provided. The grievance was marked as resolved without addressing the problem. The situation on the portal is causing absolute chaos and needs urgent attention,” says another user Jaskaran Singh.
“The e-filing portal is working fine. Please try again after clearing the browser cache or try using a different browser. Should you still case any issues, please share your details (along with PAN and your mobile number) at orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in. Our team will get in touch with you,” say officials at the Income tax department.
