Google has announced a new update to Google Gemini that enables users to create their own AI-powered mini apps, expanding how generative AI can be used for everyday tasks, learning, and creative exploration. According to Google, these experimental tools, called Gems, are designed to turn simple prompts into actionable, purpose-built experiences. “These experimental Gems turn your prompts into actionable tools that can help you complete everyday tasks or explore new ideas,” the company said while announcing the update.

With this rollout, users can build and experiment with a range of AI mini apps, each tailored to specific use cases. One such example is the Recipe Genie Gem, which allows users to transform leftover ingredients into complete meals. By describing available ingredients or uploading a photo, users can receive a personalised recipe that can be edited or customised directly within the mini app.

It enables users to convert any topic into an animated claymation-style infographic, helping simplify complex concepts for students, educators, or anyone looking for an engaging way to understand ideas. For professionals and creators, the Marketing Maven Gem acts as a brainstorming and strategy assistant. It supports content and marketing planning by helping users generate ideas, overcome creative blocks, and structure campaigns more effectively.

Google is also allowing users to create, remix, and share their own AI mini apps and custom workflows through Google Labs. Users can start with a pre-made Gem or modify existing ones to suit their specific requirements, offering flexibility and experimentation within the Gemini ecosystem. With these updates, Google appears to be positioning Gemini not just as a conversational AI, but as a platform for building lightweight, task-focused AI applications that can be easily customised and shared.
