MongoDB Launches Application Modernization Platform AMP to Address Legacy Software Challenges

MongoDB announced the launch of its new Application Modernization Platform (AMP), a structured solution designed to help organizations transition from legacy applications to modern, scalable systems.  MongoDB AMP helps customers modernize through the fusion of an AI-powered software platform, a proven delivery framework, and experienced AMP delivery engineers who oversee and guide the implementation process.

The company said AMP combines AI-powered tools, methodologies, and modernization expertise to help enterprises update critical applications more quickly and with less risk. According to MongoDB, the platform can accelerate modernization by up to ten times compared to traditional approaches.

“Enterprises are increasingly grappling with the burden of complex legacy applications, constrained by rigid data foundations and outdated architectures that stifle innovation,” said Rachel Stephens, Research Director at RedMonk. “While traditionally recognized for its database capabilities, MongoDB’s strategic expansion into an AI-powered Application Modernization Platform highlights a critical understanding: the data layer remains an indispensable foundation for truly modern, scalable services. AMP empowers organizations to go beyond incremental ‘lift and shift’ migrations, instead focusing on full-stack transformation from the data up.”

The traditional approach to application modernization typically involves expensive multi-year consulting engagements that can be manual and resource-intensive, and which can stall out before delivering results, impacting time-to-market. What’s more, some modernization efforts seek to simply move legacy applications from one relational database to another (a “lift and shift” migration), instead of switching to a flexible, modern database solution. AMP focuses on what MongoDB calls the “three Ts” – tools, techniques, and talent. The platform provides automated code conversion, data migration, and testing support while pairing these capabilities with structured methodologies and MongoDB’s in-house modernization experts.

The announcement comes amid rising concerns about technical debt, particularly from outdated systems that continue to run essential business processes. A 2024 estimate cited during the event suggested the cost of poor software quality and maintaining aging applications in the US could reach $4 trillion.

“Research shows that too many organizations spend time and budget on low-value, high-effort work simply to keep the lights on, which impacts their ability to keep pace with competitors,” said Vinod Bagal, Senior Vice President, Modernization and Transformation at MongoDB. “MongoDB AMP offers enterprises a better approach to modernization. It helps companies move from traditional to transformative with remarkable speed and quality, opening doors to innovation and cost savings.”

Several organizations have already worked with MongoDB on modernization projects. Lombard Odier, a Swiss bank, reported migration speeds up to 60 times faster with MongoDB, while Bendigo Bank in Australia said development time for a core banking migration was reduced by 90%. Fintech platform Intellect AI also reported faster onboarding workflows for clients after moving from a monolithic architecture.

“At IntellectAI, we are redefining how enterprises unlock value with AI,” said Deepak Dastrala, Chief Technology Officer at IntellectAI. “Modernizing with MongoDB has transformed how we deliver value to our customers, freeing us from bottlenecks and accelerating the realization of our AI vision. One of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds, with trillions under management, relies on our flagship enterprise AI platform, Purple Fabric (powered by MongoDB) to support real-time investment decisions. Together, IntellectAI and MongoDB are enabling clients to turn AI vision into measurable business impact.”

Can Technical Debt Slow Down the Enterprise Adoption of AMP?

MongoDB says that security and technical debt have been central considerations in the design of its Application Modernization Platform (AMP). The company noted that it works with security experts daily to ensure customers are left with applications that are secure, scalable, and compliant with regulatory changes.

On the issue of technical debt, the company acknowledged the complexity of legacy systems and said that AMP was built to address this directly. By combining AI-powered and deterministic tools with the support of modernization experts, MongoDB aims to help customers move away from outdated architectures more quickly.

According to the company, organizations using AMP have already seen modernization timelines shrink by two to three times, with some reporting transformations up to ten times faster than traditional methods. MongoDB added that it is continuing to refine the platform to further reduce modernization cycles.
