Experts Highlight the Evolving Meaning of Literacy in the Age of AI

As the world observes International Literacy Day today, thought leaders from academia and industry are accentuating the changing definition of literacy in a digital-first world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence (AI).

Chintan Dave, India Head, AI CERTs, emphasized that literacy in today’s era extends beyond the ability to read and write. He said: “Literacy has always been the cornerstone of progress, but in the digital era, it has taken on a new dimension. Today, being literate is not only the ability to read and write but also the ability to question what technology presents, to interpret data, and to understand the profound impact of artificial intelligence on our lives. This year’s theme reminds us that the future will belong to those who can navigate both knowledge and technology with discernment. In an age where information travels faster than human comprehension, the true test of literacy lies not in access but in interpretation, application, and responsibility. Literacy in the age of AI is not about replacing books with code; it is about strengthening our capacity to think critically, act ethically, and innovate with purpose. On International Literacy Day, we are reminded that true empowerment comes when technological fluency and human values move together, ensuring that progress serves not just economies but societies at large.”

Adding to this perspective, Dr. Jaskiran Arora, Professor & Dean–Education Quality at BML Munjal University, highlighted the indispensable role of educators in balancing AI’s rise in classrooms. She said: “In recent years, we have witnessed a profound transformation in education. What began as cautious integration of technology has now evolved into an era where digital tools and artificial intelligence are becoming inseparable from learning. Algorithms may deliver content, but they cannot nurture curiosity, build resilience, or instill ethical responsibility and this makes the role of educators vital in ensuring the responsible use of AI in classrooms. Educators today stand at the intersection of knowledge and wisdom, shaping learners not just to succeed in their careers but to navigate complexity with empathy and purpose. In doing so, they reaffirm a timeless truth: teaching is not about information alone, but about transformation. The future of education may be powered by technology, but it will continue to be led by teachers.”

True literacy in the AI era, according to experts, means cultivating critical thinking, ethical responsibility, and human values alongside technological fluency.
