    Meta Ends Instagram Encrypted Messages: What Does it Mean?

    Meta has announced that it is officially pulling the plug on Instagram encrypted messages. This support officially ends on 8 May 2026. End-to-end encrypted messages is a privacy feature that Meta supports for WhatsApp and Instagram chats. While no clear has been provided for this decision, the company has stated that for chats that may be impacted by this change, users will see instructions on how to download any media or messages that they would want to preserve.

    Users who wish to save their chats and media will have to do so before the 8 of May 2026. Those who are using the older version of Instagram will need to update the app before they can proceed with downloading their affected chats. This decision has met with mixed reactions on social media, as it technically means that Meta will now be able to access chats in case they wish to moderate it.

    How Instagram Encrypted Messages Work, and What it Means for Users

    End-to-end encrypted messages and calls, which are still applicable to Meta-owned WhatsApp, means that only the user in question and the people they are communicating with can see or listen to what is sent over the platform. Every device participating in an end-to-end encrypted conversation uses a unique key to secure the communication. Users can compare these keys with one another to verify that their messages and calls are protected by end-to-end encryption.

    When a message is sent in an end-to-end encrypted chat, the sender’s device encrypts it before transmission. The message can only be decrypted by a device that holds the corresponding key for that conversation. The same protection applies to the content of audio and video calls.

    No third person or party, including Meta, were able to access the chats. However, users were allowed to share chats for reporting or optional features, meaning that they or someone else in the conversation could still choose to share messages with Meta Ending this feature would mean that Meta will now be able to access the chats of users, with or without reports from accounts.
