Samsung Galaxy XR Headset Launched: Check Important Details

Samsung Electronics has officially entered the extended reality (XR) space with the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy XR headset. The device is the first to run on the new Android XR platform, which is a joint effort by Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm Technologies, and is being positioned by the company as an AI-native device built to redefine how users explore, learn, and interact in digital environments.

The Galaxy XR has been designed to merge the physical and digital worlds seamlessly, says the company, thus enabling users to perform everyday tasks or explore entirely new digital frontiers through a mix of augmented and virtual reality capabilities. Samsung says the headset represents the “first step” in its long-term XR roadmap, which will eventually include products such as AI-powered smart glasses.

“With Galaxy XR, Samsung is introducing a brand-new ecosystem of mobile devices,” said Won-Joon Choi, Chief Operating Officer of Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics. “Built on Android XR, Galaxy XR expands the vision for mobile AI into a new frontier of immersive and meaningful possibilities, allowing XR to move from concept to everyday reality, for both the industry and users.”

The Samsung Galaxy XR headset has been integrated deeply with Google’s ecosystem. It supports Google Maps, YouTube, Circle to Search, and Google Photos, each reimagined for immersive use. For instance, with Google Maps in 3D, users can navigate virtual landscapes and rely on Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, for personalized recommendations on nearby spots. On YouTube, Gemini can help locate and explain content, turning passive watching into an interactive learning experience.

“Android XR is the first Android platform built entirely for the Gemini era, and we are incredibly excited to take a significant leap forward today with the launch of Galaxy XR”, said Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google. “Through our partnership with Samsung, Android XR will unlock entirely new ways to explore, connect and create, building an open, unified platform for the next evolution of computing.”

One standout feature is the video passthrough mode, allowing users to view their physical surroundings while engaging digitally. A simple hand gesture, drawing a circle, lets them instantly search for information about any object in sight. Another innovation is auto-spatialization, which transforms ordinary 2D photos and videos into 3D visuals, adding depth and realism to personal memories.

Key Specifications and Features of Samsung Galaxy XR Headset

The Galaxy XR packs top-tier hardware to support its immersive capabilities, says the company. It comes with 16GB memory and 256GB storage, powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform. The headset features a Micro-OLED display with a resolution of 3,552 x 3,840 pixels, amounting to 27 million pixels, with 95% DCI-P3 color coverage and refresh rates of up to 90Hz.

Offering a wide 109° horizontal and 100° vertical field of view, the headset ensures an expansive visual experience. It supports 3D photo and video capture through a 6.5MP camera with an 18mm F2.0 lens and integrates an extensive sensor suite including six world-facing tracking cameras, four eye-tracking cameras, five IMUs, a depth sensor, and a flicker sensor.

For security and personalization, the device includes iris recognition, allowing users to unlock the headset or access password-protected apps securely. The audio experience is powered by dual two-way speakers (woofer + tweeter) and a six-microphone array with beamforming capabilities. The headset supports a wide range of audio codecs including Dolby Atmos, while video playback goes up to 8K UHD (7680×4320) at 60fps, with HDR10 and HLG support.

Battery life will last for up to two hours of general use and 2.5 hours of video playback, with the option to use the headset while charging. Connectivity features include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. The device weighs 545g (with the forehead cushion), and the separate battery adds another 302g. It supports interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustment from 54 to 70mm and optional vision correction inserts, available separately.

The Samsung Galaxy XR headset will be available across the US from 21 October and in Korea from 22 October.
