New Epson Manufacturing Facility in Chennai Reinforces ‘Make in India’ Vision: Junkichi Yoshida

In a landmark moment for Epson and the Indian manufacturing ecosystem, Seiko Epson Corporation inaugurated its first ink tank printer manufacturing facility in India, located in Chennai. The facility has been developed in collaboration with Rikun, which the company says highlights Epson’s long-term commitment to “Make in India”, sustainability, and local innovation.

The event was presided over by Junkichi Yoshida, President and CEO of Seiko Epson Corporation, who called it a “historic day” for the global Epson family. “We are celebrating a big milestone, the opening of our first ink tank printer manufacturing facility in India, built in partnership with our trusted partner Rikun. This comes just after Epson’s 50th anniversary as a brand, which we celebrated on 12 June 2025,” said Yoshida.

“Epson’s journey in India began in the early 1990s and has since evolved into a strong, customer-centric presence with a nationwide sales network and over 400 service centers. Today, Epson India is a market leader in several product categories with a turnover exceeding Rs 2,500 crore. The company has already sold over 100 million EcoTank printers worldwide, with 8 million units sold in India alone,” added Yoshida.

Highlighting the country’s strategic importance, Yoshida noted, “This new manufacturing facility shows our commitment to meeting local demand and supporting the government’s Make in India initiative. We also hope to see more EcoTank printers used in government offices and the public services. This facility reflects our intention to grow with India, not only as a market but as a center of innovation and excellence.”

Set to begin operations in October, the Chennai plant will initially focus on the production of EcoTank printers, which is a flagship category for Epson known for its refillable ink tanks and sustainable design. Future plans include expanding into components and other product lines, reflecting Epson’s broader strategy to integrate sustainability, local manufacturing, and innovation.

Beyond printers, Epson India offers textile printers, industrial robots, visual imaging tools, and business printing solutions, targeting productivity enhancement across education, manufacturing, healthcare, retail, and SMEs. Yoshida reiterated that Epson is “much more than a printer company”, describing it as a technology-driven organization rooted in precision engineering, robotics, and imaging.

A key highlight of Epson’s vision is sustainability. The company has committed to becoming carbon-negative and underground resource-free by 2050, aligning with India’s environmental goals. “Innovation should have a purpose, and sustainability must be at the core,” Yoshida emphasized.

He also touched upon Epson’s recent acquisition of Fiery, a global leader in digital printing technologies. Fiery’s strong development team in India is expected to further bolster Epson’s capabilities in color management, workflow automation, and customer experience.

According to Yoshida the inauguration ceremony marked a new chapter in Epson’s India story, one rooted in technology, purpose-driven innovation, and impactful collaboration. “With strong support from Rikun and the Epson India team, I’m confident this plant will set new benchmarks in quality, efficiency, and sustainability,” Yoshida said.
