JSW Steel Orchestrates Mega-scale Transformation of its Value Chain

JSW Steel, the flagship business of the diversified US$24 billion JSW Group, ranks among India’s best steel companies. Over the last three decades, the company has evolved from a single manufacturing unit to a premier integrated steel plant with a capacity of 35.7 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) in India and the USA (including 6 MTPA under commissioning in India). The company aims to expand its total capacity to 38.5 MTPA in this year. Reliable, scalable, and secure API integrations are helping JSW Steel transform its customer-centric value chain across multiple plants, 4+ customer segments, 6+ product categories, and 32 systems.

    The Challenge for JSW Steel

JSW Steel wanted to fulfill customer orders on time, in full, and seamlessly across its value chain. The end goal was to shift from a plant-centric way of working to a customer-centric one, while also improving operational efficiency.

This meant integrating various internal and external systems, including ERP, CRM, demand planning, manufacturing, and data warehouse applications. Through these integrations, data on orders, inventory, product variant configuration (VC), pricing, and other operational aspects would flow smoothly across JSW Steel’s complex ecosystem. But more than simple point-to-point integrations, the company wanted a next-generation,  scalable, and secure integration infrastructure with API orchestration and composability at its core.

“Although we have several integration solutions, we needed a modern framework that would help us operate with an outside-in view, and enable a superlative JSW customer experience,” says Satyen Shah, VP, Digital Solutions & IT, Sales & Marketing, JSW Steel. “Mulesoft helped us fulfil complex data requests seamlessly and securely.”

    How Salesforce Helps

Using MuleSoft, JSW Steel could create, deploy, and govern both new and existing APIs with ease. The company has already created 120+ APIs, and integrated up to 32 systems for a streamlined order management experience.

Enquiries, contracts, and orders are created on the Salesforce CRM through tight integrations with JSW Steel’s demand planning system (which selects the optimal plant for order fulfilment), ERP system (which validates product variant configuration (VC) and pricing), and manufacturing systems (which capture and manage production schedules).

Pre-built connectors automatically sync master data from the ERP platform to Salesforce, enabling data accuracy and integrity across systems. Since inventory data is integrated with sales and order management data, teams have real-time visibility into stock levels. So, if there’s any surplus or free inventory, they can quickly redirect it to customer orders, thereby improving liquidation rates.

MuleSoft also syncs data on orders, delivery timelines, and production schedules across systems. With visibility into this data, teams can optimise schedules, predict delays, and adhere more closely to promised delivery dates.

The cost to serve customers has also reduced with MuleSoft automating the flow of data and processes across departments.

Flexible and secure APIs drive scalability, improve speed-to-market

Through API integrations, JSW Steel could go to market faster with new initiatives, while also hyper-personalising customer experiences. MuleSoft feeds data to an enterprise data visualisation platform, enabling teams to model and analyse customer insights effectively.

Since MuleSoft supports both composable and reusable APIs, it can be scaled up with ease to accommodate JSW Steel’s rapidly growing customer base. Already, the platform is used in four customer segments, six major product verticals, and multiple plants across JSW Steel’s domestic and exports businesses.

“All these data integrations have been enabled with a 99.7% success rate,” says Shah. “Within a short period, we’ve seen an exponential jump of 52% in the number of API calls generated. That translates to about 7.2 million API calls per annum.”

MuleSoft’s complex implementation was made simple due to two factors – inbuilt integrations with the Salesforce CRM platform; and the expertise of implementation partner, PwC.

PwC went above and beyond the business requirements document to ensure that JSW Steel achieved the desired outcomes.

    The Salesforce Difference

With MuleSoft, JSW Steel isn’t just integrating more systems. The company is streamlining the flow of data and processes across a vast and complex operational network. This is helping teams work faster, and scale up business growth, while also delivering superlative customer experiences throughout the order-to-cash cycle.
