Duolingo English Test (DET) recently announced the launch of its DETermined Scholarship, aimed at empowering Indian women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Severin Hacker, Co-founder and CTO of Duolingo, addressed the media during the launch event held in New Delhi, sharing insights into the company’s mission and journey. “At Duolingo, our mission is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally accessible,” Hacker stated. “We strive to reduce inequality globally by enabling more people to access quality education.”
How Duolingo Came into Existence
Hacker highlighted Duolingo’s two flagship products—the widely popular language-learning app and the Duolingo English Test (DET). The language-learning app boasts nearly 113 million monthly active users, with 37 million engaging daily. Over the years, the app has registered close to a billion users globally, making it the most popular educational app in almost every market, including India.
“India is one of our top 10 markets, and we are witnessing tremendous growth,” Hacker shared. “We are deeply committed to investing in India to help more people learn new languages.” Hacker emphasized the transformative nature of the DET, which was launched in 2016 to address the challenges faced by students in traditional English proficiency tests. The DET allows students to take the test from anywhere, eliminating the need for expensive fees, long travel, and lengthy waiting periods for results.
“We’ve flipped English testing on its head,” Hacker explained. “The DET certifies actual English ability, not access to testing centers or financial background.” The test has garnered widespread acceptance, with over 5,500 universities worldwide recognizing it, including 98 of the top 100 universities in the United States. “We believe the DET will be a game-changer for students worldwide, especially for those in India who need greater access to educational opportunities. Universities are increasingly embracing the DET, recognizing the significant impact it has on students and their ability to showcase their potential. By adopting the DET, universities can tap into a broader and more diverse pool of talent globally,” added Hacker.
Bridging Gaps in Education
Tara Kapoor, India Lead for the DET, added further perspective, highlighting the gender disparity in education access within India. “Globally, 50% of our test takers are women, but in India, access remains a significant barrier,” Kapoor noted. “The DET opens up opportunities for students in over 1,000 locations across India, particularly in rural areas where traditional testing centers are inaccessible.”
Empowering Indian Women in STEM through Duolingo English Test DETermined Scholarship
The DETermined Scholarship is designed to address these challenges directly, offering financial support and encouragement for Indian women pursuing STEM fields. The scholarship aligns with Duolingo’s mission of inclusivity and accessibility, which has already resulted in partnerships with organizations like the UNHCR to support refugee students, stated Hacker.
“Having experienced the transformative power of education as a student abroad who had the chance to study in the US, I strongly believe that providing opportunities to students is key to unlocking their potential. The philosophy behind the DETermined Scholarship is rooted in Duolingo’s mission to make education accessible to all. We are pleased to partner with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser for this scholarship, aligning our shared vision of empowering the next generation of leaders. By supporting talented women in STEM, we are not only helping them realize their dreams but also contributing to a more inclusive and innovative future for India and the world. It reflects our commitment to breaking down barriers and ensuring that every student has the chance to thrive, regardless of their background,” he added.
