ChatGPT image generator, which was earlier available for only ChatGPT Plus subscribers, has now been made free for all users. The decision was announced by Sam Altman, founder, OpenAI. “ChatGPT image generation now rolled out to all free users,” he said. The company said that GPT‑4o image generation excels at accurately rendering text, precisely following prompts, and leveraging 4o’s inherent knowledge base and chat context, including transforming uploaded images or using them as visual inspiration. “These capabilities make it easier to create exactly the image you envision, helping you communicate more effectively through visuals and advancing image generation into a practical tool with precision and power,” added the company.
The feature, which is currently free for Plus, Pro, Team, and Free users as the default image generator in ChatGPT, will soon be available for Enterprise and Edu. In addition to this, developers will soon be able to generate images with GPT‑4o via the API, with access rolling out in the next few weeks.

How to use ChatGPT Image Generator?
The ChatGPT image generator is the same as using the AI chatbot, which is getting the desired output by providing text prompts. Users need to do the following to generate images:
- Provide the text prompt to generate the desired image. For example, ask ChatGPT to create a hilly area where the sun is rising.
- To edit existing images, users will first have to upload their images from their photo galleries and then provide the desired prompt. For example, say create Ghibli style studio art.
- Users will also be able to detail existing photographs like adding an accessory to the image or add a hat to the costume and so on.

While the feature is undoubtedly being appreciated by a large section of users, free users of ChatGPT claim to be facing a range of issues. Some of the issues faced are as follows:
- Some users have been facing issues with image generation limits: “What’s the point of introducing a new update while limiting image generation rates—especially for paid users? It’s frustrating to constantly receive feedback about violating content policies when all I’m requesting is something as simple as a family man with his kids. What’s going on?” Says one such user.
- ChatGPT has also been refusing some prompts claiming violation of content policies. “I wasn’t able to edit the image because this request violates our content policies. Let me know if you’d like to modify the request or try something different,” says the chatbot.
- Free users have also been facing problems with the time taken to generate images. “I don’t think it’s working for free users, it’s been generating for 10 mins and no luck yet,” says a user.
- ChatGPT image generator has also been generating images of prompts that were not provided or introducing new elements into a photograph.
