Google recently revealed the broader release of the YouTube Music Gemini Extension, expanding the capabilities of its AI chatbot, Gemini, at its developer conference, I/O 2024. With this new capability, Gemini users may now interact with and manage YouTube Music within the chatbot, giving the platform access to several fundamental phone assistant features.
Users can visit gemini.google.com/extensions on their PC or Android phone to activate the extension. After connecting, Gemini may answer several commands linked to music and access the user’s YouTube Music collection. As of right now, the plugin only works with English prompts. With this advancement, the Gemini AI should become more potent and versatile than the Google Assistant.
How to Utilise Gemini YouTube
Now, users may start background playback on their Android devices by giving simple commands like “Play [song]” or “Play [artist]”. The YouTube Music app will launch for iOS users to fulfill their desires. In response to these orders, Gemini displays a card with the cover image, artist details, duration, and play count. It is also possible to issue more specialised commands, such as “Find [song name] by [artist name]” or “Search for [genre] music,” which facilitates users in finding and playing their preferred music.
Gemini Capable of Managing Playback Controls
Track pause, resume, stop, skip, and restart options are available via the following commands: “Pause,” “Resume or play,” “Stop,” “Skip or next,” “Previous,” and “Restart or go back.” With this set of controls, using the music service hands-free is made possible on YouTube, significantly improving the user experience. On Android devices, background play is only available to YouTube Music Premium subscribers.

Meanwhile, users can react to prompts like “Play music that I like” or “Show some rock music,” which play songs from their “Liked Music” playlist, to engage in more conversational interaction. Furthermore, users can initiate a radio station based on a specific song or request specific music video searches.
When a user tries to play media on a desktop device using Gemini, 9to5Google reports that they will get a message saying that while the chatbot can link to the song on YouTube Music, it cannot help with direct media playback.
Google intends to provide new extensions for Calendar, Keep, Tasks, and other utilities, such as the Clock app for Android, to enhance Gemini’s usefulness in the future. With its ongoing development, Gemini looks set to become an even more essential component of Google’s ecosystem, providing customers with a full-featured AI-driven assistant for various tasks and services.
