Samip Mutha Joins Tata Chemicals as Global Chief Digital and Information Officer

Samip Mutha has joined Tata Chemicals as its Global Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO), taking charge of AI, digital and IT initiatives across the company’s global operations. Mutha returns to India after spending more than three years in the United Kingdom, where he was associated with Japanese technology group TechnoPro Holdings. As EVP and Country Head – EU and Middle East, Digital Business, he played a key role in establishing the group’s digital business in Europe and the Middle East, including building its operations and driving growth across the regions.

In his new role at Tata Chemicals, Mutha will be responsible for driving the company’s digital and technology transformation agenda across its operations in India, Kenya, the US, UK and Singapore. Sharing the development, Mutha said, “After an incredible 3.5 years in the UK helping a Japanese group establish their Digital Business Robosoft Technologies in EU and Middle East, I’m happy to share that I’ve returned to India and joined Tata Chemicals as Global Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO), leading AI, Digital and IT across our global sites in India, Kenya, US, UK and Singapore.” He also described the move as a significant milestone in his professional journey, saying it was special to join the Tata Group, which he described as an institution built on values and trust.

Mutha brings more than 22 years of experience across digital transformation, technology, management consulting and business leadership. His career includes more than a decade in management consulting with organisations including IBM and PwC, followed by senior digital leadership roles in large enterprises. Before moving to the UK, Mutha spent nearly a decade with RPG Group, where he served as Vice President and Chief Digital and Innovation Officer from 2018 to 2023. At RPG, he was responsible for the digital and innovation agenda across six businesses spanning life sciences, EPC, energy, tyres, plantations and IT. During his tenure, he built the group’s digital function, including a team of more than 25 professionals and a technology and digital budget of over Rs 100 crore. His work focused on using digital technologies to drive operational efficiency, business growth and new revenue streams.

Mutha has also led digital transformation programmes around smart manufacturing, connected customers, intelligent workplaces and smart products. At RPG Group, he was involved in developing AI-led digital products and platforms and initiatives aimed at building digital capabilities across a workforce of more than 30,000 employees. His work has included the implementation of World Economic Forum Lighthouse approaches at manufacturing sites, with initiatives delivering reported business benefits of more than $6 million. He has also worked on AI/ML-led procurement optimisation programmes involving spending of around $500 million.

Before joining RPG, Mutha held consulting and digital leadership roles, including Head of Digital Enterprise Consulting for EMEA in the IT sector. His early career included management consulting assignments with IBM and PwC.

His recent international stint included establishing a European office for TechnoPro Holdings, developing the company’s Middle East business and building a manufacturing practice focused on engineering and RandD for automobile clients in Japan and India. He also led organic and inorganic growth initiatives for the Japanese technology group. Mutha’s experience spans AI, industrial digital transformation, smart manufacturing, enterprise platforms, emerging technologies and digital strategy. He has also worked on initiatives involving blockchain, metaverse and drone technologies.

He has received several industry recognitions, including the National CIO Trendsetter award, Golden Peacock Innovation Award, EY-Mint Best AI Innovation Award and Economic Times Most Innovative Company recognition. His digital leadership work at RPG also contributed to a World Economic Forum Lighthouse certification for CEAT.

Mutha holds a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Lamar University, Texas, and a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Pune University. He has also completed the Platform Thinking programme at Wharton Business School. With his return to India and appointment at Tata Chemicals, Mutha joins the company’s leadership at a time when AI, digital platforms, data and technology-led operational transformation are becoming increasingly central to the manufacturing and chemicals sector.
