From Siloed Processes to Seamless Projects: Varghese Daniel, Wrench Solutions

In the fast-evolving world of engineering and construction, inefficiencies caused by siloed processes and fragmented information often derail project timelines, inflate costs, and compromise quality. In this interview with Tech Achieve Media, Varghese Daniel, Co-founder and CEO, Wrench Solutions shares how cutting-edge data and process management tools are bridging gaps, embedding best practices, and transforming the industry from manual, fragmented workflows to integrated, system-driven operations. With a global footprint spanning 37 countries, Wrench Solutions is addressing the challenges of today as well as reshaping the future of engineering and construction with its innovative approach.

TAM: How do Wrench Solutions’ data and process management tools address the unique challenges faced by engineering and construction firms today?

Varghese Daniel: Lack of integration is behind all the other challenges. Everything still functions in silos and information is still manually shared between processes and between people. Take best practices, which are supposed to ensure quality; without integration how do you enforce the best practice, the QMS or ISO protocol, across an entire project and all its various stakeholders, phases, deliverables?  That’s where Wrench comes in. We’ve embedded the best practices right into our software, and we used our learnings from customers in 37 countries to cater to our client’s specific geography, vertical, and role (whether owner, consultant, or contractor). So you could say we fill in the missing link that triggers most of the industry’s problems.

TAM: With SmartProject gaining traction worldwide, how do you see it reshaping the engineering and construction industry on a global scale?

Varghese Daniel: Reshaping is the right word. That’s exactly what is going on. Companies are learning that small improvements won’t do and so they need to completely shift project management from manual to system-driven. We at Wrench adopted a motto of Zero Tolerance to Delay to show our clients that Zero Delay is indeed possible – not less delay but NO delay. Many still underestimate the huge impact technology can have on their business, so first we help them set new goals and then we help them meet those goals. Because with the changes sweeping across the world there is no other way for EPC to survive, much less thrive, in the digital era, and the industry needs to wake up to that fact.

TAM: What role does integrated information management play in ensuring on-time, budget-friendly, and quality-focused project delivery in the EPC sector?

Varghese Daniel: Integrated Information is the only way to complete projects successfully. Consider: you have multiple stakeholders with multiple inter-dependencies and somehow you need to synchronise everyone’s schedules – how do you do that without integrated information management? Or, you’re trying to keep your project on track in a volatile economy with an unpredictable climate – how do you plan without the right information at the right time? Whereas with integrated information at your fingertips you could easily identify potential problems before they became actual problems and you could work predictively and proactively rather than defensively and reactively. And when your effort and time isn’t wasted on firefighting and damage control you are far more likely to complete work on time, on budget, with quality. That’s what integrated information management delivers.

TAM: How do you foresee emerging technologies like AI, IoT, and digital twins influencing the future of project management in engineering and construction?

Varghese Daniel: All these technologies bring more control to project management. IoT simply means all the physical devices, appliances, etc, among with various sensors, software, and network connectivity and so on which collect and share data, and AI and machine learning helps you interpret and act on that data. AI can analyse huge amounts of information and give you actionable insights, help make better decisions, help with contingency planning. Digital twinning lets you see what’s happening on the site without having to travel to the site – so all these new technologies give you more control, let you plan ahead, have more predictability. You can reduce the constant crisis management and instead focus on building trust between partners and stakeholders. So ultimately, all these technologies will make project-management more efficient, more profitable, and less tedious.

TAM: Based on your journey with Wrench Solutions, what advice would you give to industry leaders aiming to leverage technology for operational excellence?

Varghese Daniel: Embrace change! Not superficially – be willing to rethink some of your foundational ideas. Otherwise you will end up with false starts and time and money wasted. I’ll explain why: let’s say you decided to adopt best practices in a bid to standardise your process. That’s great, but you can’t achieve it simply by adding ‘new technology’ on top of your existing process or infrastructure. It doesn’t work like that. It’s not just a matter of digitising your current (semi-automated) process, you have to change the process itself. So my advice is – don’t try this at home. Call on the experts, people who understand your industry, your project, your sub-vertical, your organisation, your traditions, the local infrastructure and logistics, – as well as digital technology. Then together you can bring about the holistic and long-lasting changes required for operational excellence.
