TAM: Arya Omnitalk has made significant strides in toll and highway traffic management systems with over 1,200 toll lanes and 1,000 km of advanced traffic management solutions implemented. What are the main challenges you’ve encountered in expanding these services across India, and how do you see this segment shaping up in the future?
Paresh Shetty: The implementation of toll collection in India has faced several challenges, primarily due to the diverse and unevolved road infrastructure, and varying levels of technological adoption. Some of the key challenges include:
Poor internet connectivity in outskirts and rural areas has hindered the functioning of electronic toll collection (ETC) systems. Equipment failures at toll plazas, such as malfunctioning of scanners or communication devices, can cause delays and disruptions. Many toll plazas have outdated infrastructure that is incompatible with modern ETC systems. There is a persistent issue of public resistance while paying tolls .Some drivers try to avoid paying tolls, leading to evasion and law enforcement issues. There is always a risk of data breach of sensitive information leaking out, such as vehicle registration details and payment information.
There is no standardised and structured way of appointing toll operators in the country. This leads to having multiple toll operators who lead to inconsistent standards and procedures in toll collection.
To address these challenges, Indian authorities have been working on implementing advanced technologies, such as electronic toll collection (ETC) systems and toll plazas with multiple lanes. Additionally, efforts are being made to improve infrastructure, enhance data security, and promote public awareness about the benefits of toll collection.
The toll industry segment is poised for significant growth in the future. As urbanization continues and economic development progresses, traffic volumes are expected to rise, leading to increased demand for toll roads. Governments is investing heavily in infrastructure projects, including the construction of new highways and expressways, which will require toll collection to recoup investment costs. PPP models are becoming increasingly popular, allowing private companies to invest in and operate toll roads, bringing in additional capital and expertise. Toll roads are likely to be integrated with other transportation modes, such as railways and metro systems, creating multimodal networks that offer efficient and convenient travel options. The toll industry is increasingly focusing on sustainability, with initiatives to reduce environmental impact and promote energy efficiency. Overall, the toll industry is expected to experience significant growth and transformation in the coming years, driven by technological advancements, infrastructure development, and increasing traffic volumes.
However, the future of the toll industry also faces challenges, such as public resistance to toll charges, concerns about data privacy and security, and the potential impact of technological disruptions. To ensure long-term success, the industry will need to adapt to these challenges and continue to innovate.
