    Dating App Scams On the Rise, Here’s the Modus Operandi of Scammers

    Dating apps are undoubtedly a great way to meet new people. Nevertheless, even these apps haven’t been spared by scammers. New dating app scams have come to light, and several victims who fell victim to the fraud have taken to social media platforms to warn others from falling prey. The victims claim that they met these scammers on a popular dating apps like Bumble and Tinder. 

    How Dating App Scams Work

    The scam usually involves the following methodology:

    • Connect with the victim through dating apps like Tinder and Bumble.
    • Arrange a meeting within a few minutes or hours of chatting over the app.
    • The scammer usually wins the victims trust by sharing personal details.
    • They then suggest that the victim takes them to a specific club.
    • The scammer then proceeds to order the most expensive food and drinks without showing the menu to the victim.
    • They then make an excuse to leave abruptly, and then unmatch the victim on the dating app.
    • The victim is then forced to pay the exorbitant bill.

    Victim Accounts of Dating App Scams

    Recently, a man who fell prey to the scam, shared his personal account. The man found himself scammed out of Rs 24,000 after a seemingly innocent meet-up arranged through the popular dating app, Tinder. The man, who prefers to remain anonymous, shared his story in hopes of warning others about the sophisticated scam targeting unsuspecting men in the city.

    After the scammer ordered food and drinks, the man was shocked when he was presented with an staggering bill of 24,000. Shocked by the exorbitant prices, the man tried to pay through Zomato, hoping to avail of some offers. However, the pub management refused, claiming that Zomato payments were not working, despite the availability of table booking and bill payment options on the app. “I argued with them for some time, but they insisted I could not pay through Zomato,” he explained. “At that point, I had a hunch that it might be a scam.”

    Dating App Scams A Growing Concern

    This incident is not isolated. Several other men have come forward with similar stories, all involving the same modus operandi—meeting through a dating app, being led to a specific club, and then being forced to pay hefty bills. As online dating continues to grow in popularity, so do the risks associated with it. Users are advised to stay vigilant, avoid situations where they have no control over the ordering or payment process, and always verify the authenticity of the people they meet online.
