Digi Yatra Begins International Live Trial: Here’s How to Enroll

Digi Yatra, which is widely used by domestic travellers and has supported over 100 million journeys, will soon be available for international travellers as well. In a bid to ensure smooth travels, the organisation has now began trials that are open to travellers across India. “The Digi Yatra International Live Trial is a limited-time initiative that enables eligible Indian citizens with chip-enabled ePassports to experience Digi Yatra on select international journeys operated by participating airlines and airports. This live trial will help us introduce the Digi Yatra experience for international travel, gather passenger feedback, and further enhance the service ahead of a wider rollout,” said the organisations.

Some of the participating airports are Amritsar, Bangalore, Bombay, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, and Hyderabad. Participation in the International Live Trial is voluntary, and passengers who opt out can continue to use the standard airport procedures, adds the organisation. The initiative aims to offer passengers a more seamless international travel experience through Digi Yatra’s technology-enabled passenger processing system.

How to Enable International Journey on Digi Yatra

Interested travellers, who have downloaded the latest Digi Yatra app, version 4.3.0 or above, can sign up for the trials on their Android or iOS supported devices, and do the following:

  • Passengers can add their chip-enabled passport to the Digi Yatra app to create an ePassport-based Verifiable Credential (VC).
  • Passengers can upload or select their boarding pass through the official app for eligible international flights.
  • Eligible passengers can use dedicated Digi Yatra lanes at participating airports for a seamless and contactless airport experience.

Participation is open to Indian citizens holding a valid chip-enabled ePassport who create an ePassport-based Verifiable Credential (VC) through the app, have an eligible international departure from a participating airport on a participating airline, and provide the required consent through the app.

What International Travel Will Look Like with Digi Yatra

The International Live Trial enables eligible travellers to use facial recognition technology at key airport touchpoints, from terminal entry to boarding. The process combines digital verification with existing travel procedures to facilitate a seamless and contactless airport experience. Here’s how it will work:

  • Digi Yatra lanes can be used at the terminal entry point, where facial verification is completed to enter the airport.
  • The ePassport and other required travel documents must be presented at the airline check-in counter for verification.
  • Immigration formalities must be completed through the standard process, which is not part of the International Live Trial.
  • Dedicated Digi Yatra lanes in the Pre-Security Hold Area (Pre-SHA) enable facial matching as part of the security process.
  • Facial matching at the boarding gate through the dedicated lanes allows eligible travellers to proceed for boarding.

Those who wish to enrol for the international live trial may visit the official website for further information.
