Google Cloud Acquires Wiz to Strengthen Multi-cloud Security

Google Cloud has acquired Israeli cloud security startup Wiz, to provide customers with a comprehensive security platform that protects modern IT environments. The American multinational announced the new development through a blog, and stated that they hoped to give businesses and governments with more choice to protect themselves.

Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google, said: “From its earliest days, Google’s strong security focus has made us a leader in keeping people safe online. Today, businesses and governments that run in the cloud are looking for even stronger security solutions, and greater choice in cloud computing providers. Together, Google Cloud and Wiz will turbocharge improved cloud security and the ability to use multiple clouds.”

With the rapid evolution of cyber threats, traditional approaches to cybersecurity are increasingly falling short. Organizations operating modern IT environments require advanced solutions that span multiple clouds, hybrid setups, and on-premises infrastructures. These solutions must also address threats associated with AI models, leverage AI to enhance defenses, and integrate software development and operational security seamlessly, said Google in its blog.

Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud, said: “Google Cloud and Wiz share a joint vision to make cybersecurity more accessible and simpler to use for organizations of any size and industry. Enabling more companies to prevent cyber attacks, including in very complex business software environments, will help organizations minimize the cost, disruption and hassle caused by cybersecurity incidents.”

Google says that Wiz’s innovative platform stands out in the cybersecurity landscape. Unlike existing services, it delivers a seamless cloud security experience by connecting to all major cloud and code environments, aiming to prevent incidents proactively. Its solution swiftly scans a customer’s environment, constructing a detailed graph of code, cloud resources, services, and applications. This comprehensive mapping identifies potential attack paths, prioritizes critical risks based on their potential impact, and empowers enterprise developers to secure applications before deployment.

“Wiz’s products will continue to work and be available across all major clouds, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud platforms, and will be offered to customers through an array of partner security solutions. In addition, we are committed to continuing to support packaged applications, SaaS applications, and those running on virtual and on-premises environments,” says Google.

Moreover, Wiz facilitates collaboration between security teams and developers, enabling them to remediate risks in the code and detect or block ongoing attacks. This approach equips startups, enterprises, governments, and public sector organizations with the tools needed to protect themselves comprehensively.

Assaf Rappaport, Co-Founder and CEO, Wiz, said: “Wiz and Google Cloud are fully committed to continue supporting and protecting customers across all major clouds, helping keep them safe and secure wherever they operate. This is an exciting moment for our company, but an even more important one for customers and partners, as this acquisition will bolster our mission to improve security and prevent breaches by providing additional resources and deep AI expertise.”

Over the past year, Wiz has pioneered new cybersecurity solutions, including code-to-cloud security and cloud-native runtime defense, solidifying its position as a leader in the field. The alignment of Wiz’s vision with Google Cloud’s focus on improving security through simplicity and speed is expected to further elevate the capabilities of both entities.

As a leader in cloud infrastructure with deep expertise in AI and a history of security innovation, Google Cloud plans to leverage its resources to make Wiz’s solutions even more scalable and effective. This collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of multicloud cybersecurity, driving growth and competition in the cloud computing sector. The deal is subject to customary closing conditions including regulatory approvals.
