Artificial intelligence is emerging to be a game changer across industries, and it seems like it has left no vertical untouched. Even an un-initiated sector like traffic management is now using AI to improve its processes. For instance, Kolkata-based surveillance company Videonetics recently unveiled a case study providing insights into how it helped the Bangalore Traffic Authority solve its traffic snarls through its indigenously developed artificial intelligence and deep learning solutions.
The Problem Faced by Bangalore Traffic Authority
The urbanization of Bangalore occurred at an unprecedented rate, considering its status as the Silicon Valley of India. Multiple companies set up shop in the city, leading to an influx of employees migrating from across the country in search of employment opportunities. As the capital and largest city of Karnataka, Bangalore became a haven, particularly for IT employees who chose to reside there to enjoy its favorable climate. This, however, led to problems such as:
- Traffic congestion and management problems.
- Violations of rules and regulations.
- Accidents.
- Triple riding.
- Riding without helmets.
The Bengaluru Traffic Authority was depending on manual tickets, human interventions, and an automated red light violation system to reduce the issue. They, nevertheless, needed a solution that offered round-the-clock coverage for monitoring traffic conditions along with frequent data analysis.
The Solution Offered by Videonetics
According to a case study made public by the company, Bengaluru Traffic Authority wanted an advanced AI-based solution that is both scalable and delivers accurate results. They identified Videonetics as the appropriate company to formulate the solution for the problem. In addition to Videonetics, MATRIX Security and Surveillance Pvt Ltd was chosen as the system integrator. The solution offered by the company was as follows:
Automatic Number Plate Recognition: This solution helped the local authorities identify all suspicious, wanted, and stolen vehicles by accurately capturing and recognising the number plates of cars, taxis, buses, trucks, and autorickshaws (tuk-tuk). This enabled the operators to identify and stop all such vehicles as soon as they were captured by ANPR.
Red Light Violation Detection: An end-to-end solution that revolutionised road monitoring by generating round-the-clock alerts in various forms whenever a vehicle violates a red light at a traffic intersection.
The company also claims that the first phase of the project has successfully reached completion and covered 50 traffic junctions, which included entry and exit points, various accident-prone areas, and the busiest junctions in the city during their peak hours.
Benefits
The collaboration between Videonetics and MATRIX Security and Surveillance Pvt Ltd helped the Bangalore Traffic Authority in the following ways:
- Significant reductions violations such as red light stop, no helmet, triple riding, driving without a seatbelt, and using phones while driving.
- Live and active monitoring of traffic and reduction in overall traffic congestion.
- Tracing of vehicles in real-time using ANPR technology.
- Platform is also future ready for expansion.
