This is Microsoft’s second largest round of layoffs since the elimination of 10,000 roles in 2023, and the company has stated that it aims at reducing ‘unnecessary layers of management’. Employees distraught with the latest move by the company have also been taking to social media platforms to state their disappointment. “After 18 years at Microsoft, with roughly a decade of that time working on TypeScript, I have unfortunately been let go in the latest round of layoffs. I need to take a few days to process before I start looking for work. Thanks to everyone who’s been part of my journey so far,” says one such employee named Ron Buckton on X.

“Bittersweet news to share: I was impacted by Microsoft’s latest round of layoffs. Am I sad? Absolutely. I’m heartbroken to see so many talented people I’ve had the honor of working with being let go. These are people who cared deeply, went above and beyond, and truly made a difference” says Gabriela de Queiroz who was the director of AI at Microsoft.
She further added: “We were asked to stop work immediately and set an out-of-office. But I chose to stay a little longer, showing up for meetings, saying goodbye, wrapping up what I could. That felt right to me. To those also affected, you’re not alone. We are at least 6,000. And to those who’ve reached out, thank you. Your kindness means everything right now.” The present Microsoft layoffs, the company has indicated, are not performance based cuts but structural in nature.
