Prabhjeet Singh Joins OpenAI as Managing Director, India

OpenAI has appointed Prabhjeet Singh as Managing Director, India, as the company looks to deepen its presence in one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing markets for artificial intelligence adoption. Singh, who joins OpenAI after nearly 11 years at Uber, shared the development publicly following his first week with the company, which included meetings with the OpenAI team in San Francisco. In his new role, he will lead the company’s India business at a time when adoption of ChatGPT and broader interest in AI continue to expand across consumers, enterprises, developers and startups.

Reflecting on his move, Singh said his focus will be on turning the rapid adoption of AI in India into sustained and practical impact. “I love building and scaling new businesses: taking an ambitious idea, turning it into something people value, and building the teams and systems that help it reach millions.” Singh pointed to the pace of ChatGPT adoption in the country, noting that twice as many people in India use ChatGPT today compared with a year ago. He described the current stage of India’s AI journey as “day one”, with the next phase focused on making advanced AI more useful, accessible and affordable.

According to Singh, this will include helping businesses address complex challenges, supporting developers and startups with tools to build solutions for India and global markets, and expanding access to AI-enabled opportunities across education, work and everyday life. His appointment also brings extensive experience in building and scaling businesses in the Indian market. Singh spent more than a decade at Uber, most recently serving as President, India & South Asia. During his tenure, he led the company’s operations across one of its largest global markets, overseeing business growth, localisation, investments and industry initiatives.

Singh’s profile at Uber highlights his role in scaling the business in India and South Asia, including the growth of its consumer and driver ecosystem, engineering operations and participation in initiatives such as ONDC and fleet investments. Before joining Uber, Singh was an Associate Partner at McKinsey & Company, where he worked with more than 30 clients and CEOs across the private and public sectors in India and Southeast Asia. His work focused on business performance, sales and operations transformation, with experience spanning financial services and consumer technology.

Singh said India’s combination of talent, entrepreneurial energy and scale gives the country a significant role in the development and adoption of AI. “But India should not only benefit from the future of AI. India should help build it. And what gets built here should shape how AI is used everywhere.” He added that India’s role will be important to OpenAI’s broader ambition of developing artificial general intelligence for the benefit of humanity.

“The path to OpenAI’s vision of using AGI to benefit all of humanity goes through India.” Singh’s appointment comes as technology companies increasingly look at India not only as a major market for AI consumption, but also as a centre for product development, engineering, startups and enterprise adoption. His experience in scaling a large consumer technology business in India is expected to be relevant as OpenAI expands its engagement with the country’s businesses, developers, startups and wider user base.
