Amazon Cautions Users On New Scam

Amazon, the most popular e-commerce website in the world, has cautioned its users on a new scam. Amazon said that there has been a rise in a fraudulent activity involving customers receiving messages on shipment deliveries of orders they never made. “Ever receive an alert about a purchase on Amazon that you didn’t make? Chances are this message wasn’t even from us. There’s been a rise in scammers claiming there’s a shipping issue with your order,” said a tweet from Amazon.

Scams with Amazon and Fedex Deliveries

Several such scams have been creating ripples of late. Recently, a Fedex scam created a furore after managing to dupe an innocent victim. The parcel delivery scam usually includes fraudsters using WhatsApp calls or regular calls to contact victims, and claim to have confiscated a Fedex parcel with drugs and other illegal narcotic substances. Upon confirming that that the victim is convinced of the narrative and is in a state of panic, they ask them to join a video call. The callers display a picture in a police uniform, and may even be dressed as policemen in video calls. They then proceed to demand money from the victim to avoid legal hassles.

    How top Identify Scam Messages?

While identifying scam messages could be tricky, some of the telltales signs of a fake message are as follows:

    • Check the Sender: Pay close attention to the email address or phone number sending the message. Scammers often use fake or slightly altered addresses that mimic legitimate ones.
    • Grammar and Spelling: Scam messages often contain grammatical errors, awkward phrasing, or spelling mistakes. Legitimate organizations usually have professional communication standards.
    • Urgency and Pressure: Scammers often create a sense of urgency or pressure users to act quickly without thinking. Be cautious of messages that demand immediate action or threaten consequences.
    • Suspicious Links: Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited messages, especially if they seem out of context or lead to unfamiliar websites. Hover over links to see the actual URL before clicking.
    • Requests for Personal Information: Legitimate organizations rarely ask for sensitive information like passwords, Social Security numbers, or financial details via email or text. Be wary of any message requesting such information.

What Amazon Says Users Must Do

The popular e-commerce site has recommended users to do the following upon receiving such messages:

    • For any questions related to an order, always check order history on the “Amazon Shopping” app.
    • Don’t click any links or provide info without authenticating the email or verifying the link. Instead, visit the Message Center within the“Amazon Shopping” app.
