Global Microsoft CrowdStrike Outage Impacts Airports Worldwide, Handwritten Boarding Passes Issued

Airports around the world are facing significant disruptions due to a global IT outage affecting systems managed by Microsoft and CrowdStrike. The Microsoft Crowdtsrike outage has led to screens going blue and several airports resuming manual operations. “Due to a global outage affecting IT systems of many organisations, the check-in process for some airlines at Changi Airport is being managed manually. Changi Airport ground staff are providing assistance to passengers, especially those with an impending departure,” a statement from Changi Airport stated.

Vistara Airlines also reported technical challenges. “We are experiencing technical challenges across various aspects of our operations due to a global outage at our service provider’s end. We are working with them to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. We regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience,” said Vistara.

Similarly, operations at Delhi Airport were temporarily impacted. “Due to the global IT issue, some of the services at the Delhi Airport were temporarily impacted. We are closely working with all our stakeholders to minimise the inconvenience to our flyers,” said a Delhi Airport official.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) confirmed technical issues at their service centres and reservation hotlines but noted no impact on flight operations. “Singapore Airlines (SIA) services at the ION service centre in Singapore and our reservation hotlines are currently experiencing technical issues due to a global IT system outage. There is currently no impact on SIA flights, which are operating as scheduled. We are working closely with our service partners to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Customers who wish to make a new flight booking or amend an existing flight booking are advised to do so via the SIA website or SingaporeAir mobile app. For all non-urgent servicing requests, customers are strongly advised to reach out to us again at a later time. For all urgent servicing requests for flights departing in less than 72 hours, please reach out to us, and we will endeavour to assist you as soon as possible. SIA sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused,” a spokesperson from SIA explained.

Bangalore Airport also reported disruptions since 10:40 IST on July 19, 2024 due to the Microsoft Crowdtsrike outage. “A global IT outage has been affecting operations of some airlines across their network, including BLR Airport since 10:40 IST on July 19, 2024. In response to this situation, the affected airlines have taken proactive measures to ensure minimal disruption to passengers and flight schedules. Please get in touch with your respective airline for further information. We appreciate your patience at this time,” a Bangalore Airport official stated.

CrowdStrike’s President and CEO, George Kurtz, addressed the Crowdtsrike outage issue, stating, “CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted. This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed. We refer customers to the support portal for the latest updates and will continue to provide complete and continuous updates on our website. We further recommend organizations ensure they’re communicating with CrowdStrike representatives through official channels. Our team is fully mobilized to ensure the security and stability of CrowdStrike customers.”

As airports and airlines work to manage Microsoft Crowdstrike outage, passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates and possible delays.
