    COMPASS: Creating Environment Conducive to Growth of IT Industry

    Computer Association of Eastern India (COMPASS) is a notable association of IT entrepreneurs of Eastern India. The association claims to have over 350 members, and they cumulatively work to create and sustain an environment conducive to the growth of IT industry. While COMPASS is headquartered in Kolkata, they claim to have members across Eastern India.

    COMPASS came into being approximately 13 to 14 years ago, at 25 Ganesh Chandra Avenue in Kolkata, wherein a pivotal meeting took place amongst 12 IT dealers to discuss the necessity of forming an association to safeguard their interests and those of the industry. The following year, in 1994, the assembly grew to 19 IT dealers, and it was during this meeting that the idea for COMPASS was conceived. KL Lalani was chosen to lead this initiative., and on 9 June 1994, COMPASS was officially registered under the Companies Act, marking its formal establishment.

    Main Objectives of COMPASS

    Since its inception COMPASS has been primarily serving the growth of the eco-system revolving around the IT product distribution channels. The association has paid special emphasis towards the growth of SME members, and also towards reaching out to small towns in the Eastern region. Some of the other objectives are as follows:

    • Encourage spread of IT awareness and evolving technologies.
    • Initiatives towards knowledge enhancement.
    • Support towards legal & statutory compliances.
    • Business promotion activities.
    • Keeping close watch to ensure fair trade practices.
    • Serve as industry voice with Government to shape growth-oriented policies.
    • Unite stakeholders through fellowship and services to the society.

    COMPASS has been undertaking a host of initiatives that are aligned with the aims and objectives of its members. Some of them are as follows:

    • Facilitating participation of members in popular IT exhibitions.
    • Buyer-seller meets and other client connect initiatives.
    • Participation in B2B meets for improved industry connect.
    • Workshops on evolving technologies.
    • Seminar and conferences.
    • Have a pro-active grievance cell to resolve disputes among members and others.
    • Initiatives on anti-piracy in terms of awareness and implementation.
    • Closely monitors unfair trade practices and make adequate representations resolution.
    • Regular interaction with Government on industry specific issues.
