Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2024: Call for Identity-Centered Security and Cultural Change

As global threats evolve with unprecedented speed, Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2024 arrives at a crucial time. Rohan Vaidya, Area Vice President for SAARC & India, CyberArk highlights the urgency of addressing today’s complex and expanding cybersecurity landscape.

“Cyberattacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with a surge in supply chain threats, ransomware incidents, and AI-driven phishing attempts,” says Vaidya. He points to a troubling rise in coordinated strikes by both state-sponsored entities targeting critical infrastructure and criminal organizations using advanced technology to automate their attacks. These shifts signal that businesses need more robust defenses than ever before. “We are witnessing an increase in supply chain attacks, ransomware, and more sophisticated phishing attempts. Adversaries are becoming more coordinated; state-sponsored entities are aiming their strikes at critical infrastructure, and criminal groups are using AI to automate their attacks,” said Vaidya.

Vaidya emphasizes the importance of a proactive, risk-based approach to security that will help businesses stay one step ahead of adversaries. “This entails maintaining an identity-centered security strategy, as cybercriminals increasingly leverage human and machine identities to enter organisations’ environments to carry out wider attacks,” added Vaidya. In today’s world, where cybercriminals exploit both human and machine identities to infiltrate organizations, an identity-centered security strategy is crucial. This approach seeks to protect access points—whether they belong to individuals or machines—by focusing on how identities are managed and secured.

While technology is pivotal, Vaidya stresses that it is not a silver bullet. As Cybersecurity Awareness Month urges, companies must create a security-conscious culture. This culture should be embedded at every level, promoting accountability, providing regular training, and encouraging employees to take an active role in safeguarding company assets.

Building this culture, according to Vaidya, requires the following: “Building a security-conscious culture calls for ongoing training, clear security policy communication, and proactive employee engagement in protecting company assets. Businesses can create this culture by encouraging accountability at all organisational levels, offering frequent training, and incorporating security best practices into day-to-day operations.” As Cybersecurity Awareness Month is being observed, businesses need to be reminded that the journey to cybersecurity is not just about technological upgrades, but instead is about fostering a culture where security is a collective responsibility.
