An ATMs closed message is doing the rounds of WhatsApp, which is causing undue panic amongst citizens. The message claims that ATMs will be closed across the country, and is advising citizens to withdraw money from banks to have cash in handy. The message claims that cyberattacks by the name “Dance of the Hillary” being conducted by Pakistan.

“ATMs in Pakistan may be closed for the next 2-3 days due to a ransomware cyber-attack. Avoid making online transactions today. Additionally, inform everyone in your contact list not to open a video titled “Dance of the Hillary.” This is a dangerous virus that can format your mobile device. It has been reported as highly harmful and was announced today on BBC Radio. Please also note: a massive ransomware attack has affected 74 countries. Do not open any emails with attachments named “tasksche.exe.” Share this important message with all your computer users to ensure their safety,” reads the message.

The PIB Fact Check handle has clarified that this is a fake message, and no ATMs closed message should be circulated by citizens: “Are ATMs Closed? A viral WhatsApp message claims ATMs will be closed for 2–3 days. This Message is FAKE.
- ATMs will continue to operate as usual.
- Avoid sharing unverified messages.”
The Indian Government has been warning citizens about misinformation campaigns that are being run on social media platforms. The Government has advised the public to only rely on official handles for authentic information.
