The Indian Government has warned citizens of a misinformation campaign that is being run on social media platforms by pro-Pakistani handles. The Government termed this as a deliberate attempt to spread panic among Indian citizens. “A coordinated misinformation campaign is being waged by Pakistani social media Their objective is to sow mistrust, confusion and panic in India Do not fall prey to deliberately spread misinformation. Stay alert, Stay vigilant,” said the Indian Government.

The Indian Government recently clarified that a number of social media post claiming extensive damage to the Indian fighter jets were incorrect, and that social media accounts from Pakistan were spreading rumours to cause panic. The misinformation campaign picked up pace post the Operation Sindoor carried out by the Indian Army in retaliation to the Pahalgam Attack. “An outdated image of a crashed aircraft is being reshared by pro-Pakistan accounts in the context of Operation Sindoor. The image actually pertains to a previous incident involving an Indian Air Force (IAF) MiG-29 fighter jet that went down in Barmer, Rajasthan, in September 2024,” said the PIB Fact Check handle.
The Indian Government has stated that these campaigns will only further intensify in the days to come. “In the coming days your social media will be flooded with Pakistan sponsored propaganda. It’s crucial to scrutinize every piece of information carefully. If you encounter dubious content, especially concerning the Indian Armed Forces or any info related to ongoing situation, report it to PIB Fact Check,” said the Indian Government PIB Fact Check handle.

Citizens have also been asked to refrain from sharing posts, and unverified news and claims on social media and WhatsApp to avoid spreading panic.
