This month, Apple revealed that it is working with OpenAI to improve the artificial intelligence capabilities of macOS Sequoia and iOS 18, their most recent operating systems. This collaboration aims to give customers access to cutting-edge AI capabilities, stronger tools, and enhanced functionality on all Apple products. Using this integration, Apple and OpenAI want to provide a user experience that is both more intelligent and smooth. This is a noteworthy advancement in assimilating AI technology into routine digital interactions. Apple claims that in-house Apple Intelligence will offer a range of AI capabilities to assist users; however, to get further insights from AI, customers can access ChatGPT’s intelligence. Apple has stated that it will soon offer additional options for other chatbots, such as Google’s Gemini AI, and will not be limited to ChatGPT.
Apple to include support for further AI chatbots with iOS 18 and MacOS Sequoia
In a recent interview, Apple’s chief software engineer, Craig Federighi, stated that the company plans to include support for further AI chatbots with iOS 18 and MacOS Sequoia. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman disclosed in his most recent newsletter that Apple has been in active talks with Google and Anthropic to incorporate their AI capabilities into Apple’s platforms. Gurman reports that Apple is anticipated to advance its collaboration with Google this autumn by introducing Apple Intelligence to the general public. It is expected that the incorporation of Google’s Gemini AI will augment the capabilities of Apple’s AI systems, providing customers with an expanded range of AI-driven features.

Apple’s decision to choose Google’s Gemini AI above Meta’s chatbot is noteworthy as it underscores the company’s strict privacy regulations and strategic goals. According to reports, Apple and Meta reportedly briefly discussed the possible integration of Meta’s Llama chatbot. However, these discussions never became formal agreements, partly because Apple was uneasy about Meta’s privacy policies. Gurman pointed out that Apple is unlikely to bring up the conversation with Meta again since it thinks its privacy framework is more suited for the AI services offered by OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
Apple Intelligence to launch in autumn
Meanwhile, the iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia updates will include Apple Intelligence, which will debut later this year. The functionality, first accessible in US English, will support iPad and Mac devices with the M1 chip or later, as well as the iPhone 15 Pro. With time, Apple intends to add more languages to the list where these features can be found, giving its cutting-edge AI capabilities more people to use.
Apple Intelligence uses its in-house language models online and on-device to do activities like text summarization, image generation, and question answering. Apple says it has developed a Private Cloud Compute (PCC) server to handle AI requests from its devices. After the task, this server examines the data and deletes everything, ensuring no data is saved with Apple. Apple will also prioritise user privacy and security by providing user data encrypted from the device to the certified PCC node. Apple Intelligence will ask customers for permission to access ChatGPT or other chatbots when available, offering more alternatives and improving user experience, even though it can handle most jobs.
