iOS 17.5: Secret Features You Should Know

A wave of major updates and enhancements was recently introduced by Apple with the release of the iOS 17.5 operating system, just in time for the much-awaited WWDC 2024 event that takes place the following month. This update’s enhanced tracking detection capabilities are one of its most notable features; they give consumers more control over the security and privacy of their data. Furthermore, iOS 17.5 ensures a smooth and optimised consumer experience throughout the European Union by enhancing performance and compatibility for third-party apps.

Moreover, the update now adds offline functionality for Apple News, improving accessibility and convenience by allowing users to browse and read stories even when they are not online. Apple published the iOS 17.5 operating system with many important upgrades, such as cross-platform tracking detection, enhanced third-party app compatibility in the EU, offline support for Apple News, and more, just before the WWDC 2024 event takes place next month.

Top Features in the iOS 17.5 operating system

Cross-Platform Following Detection: For a few years, Apple has enabled iOS to identify an unidentified AirTag or Find My Network device that might secretly follow a user’s movements. Apple will now alert users if it finds a Bluetooth tracking device they are carrying with them according to the iOS 17.5 update. This functionality was developed in collaboration with Google and is accessible on Android devices as well. This update, developed in partnership with Google, introduces a new feature that alerts users whenever an unknown Bluetooth tracking device travels with them. This functionality extends beyond Apple devices and is also available on Android phones, creating a more comprehensive safety net for users across platforms. This collaborative effort signifies a significant step towards protecting user privacy and preventing stalking or unwanted location tracking.

Downloading third-party apps: In March of this year, Apple released the iOS 17.4 update, allowing users in the EU to download third-party app stores. With the most recent update, Apple has enabled consumers to download apps straight from the app developers’ websites.

On the other hand, developers must submit a form detailing their qualifications to let customers download apps from their websites. After reaching a particular threshold, these developers will also get a 0.50 euro “Core Technology Fee.” Once developers meet these qualifications and reach a specific user download threshold through their website, Apple offers a financial incentive – a “Core Technology Fee” of 0.50 euros. This fee structure suggests a potential revenue stream for developers who choose the website download route while hinting at a tiered system based on app popularity or user engagement.

Overall, this move represents a significant change for Apple’s app ecosystem. It remains to be seen how it will play out for developers and users, but one thing’s for sure: the landscape of iPhone app distribution is no longer a one-way street.

Other updates: With the most recent iOS 17.5 update, users can finally take advantage of the new functionality in iOS, iPadOS, and WatchOS. Apple also announced its annual Pride collection wallpapers. On iPhones and iPads, Apple claims that the Pride wallpaper will move dynamically when the user unlocks their device. This update coincides with Apple’s annual tradition of celebrating Pride Month with a vibrant collection of wallpapers. Interestingly, Apple teases that the iPhone and iPad wallpapers won’t be static images. They hint at a dynamic Pride wallpaper that comes alive when users unlock their devices, adding a touch of interactive flair to the celebration of inclusivity and diversity.

Apple News: Users of Apple News+ can now access the app’s news+ section and today’s feed when offline. The Cupertino-based tech giant is also launching Quartiles, a new, unique word game that will only be playable in the US and Canada.
